Indentured…

Ash and bark and brittle bone
for one such as I, each day
reborn

in morning frost
I walked winter fields
blue and cold
at dusk I scatter
like a murder of crows

Ash and bark and brittle bone
I return to the ground, alone

to sleep the sleep
of the cold and lost
a lullaby of her scepter and crown
to sleep in the earth, safe and sound

to breathe the loam and aging moss
til morrow brings
the morning frost

Ash and bark and brittle bone
I’ll wake to sounds of honeyed song

from the dark forest deep
her carriage, it comes
and I, a footman
in her legion belong

to heft the axe
and rusted shield
to walk the blood-soaked battlefield

Ash and bark and brittle bone
when evening sets, still comes the gloam

rib bones like daisies
from the dark ground sprout
when soldiers orders no longer shout
when all good cheer and flames go out

in ink-blotted skies
the stars look down
and the wailing song of women resounds

Ash and bark and brittle bones
I’ll sleep til the morrow brings me home

I, her attendant
will take her hand
flesh struck on flesh
leaves a scorching brand

she’ll dote upon death
with a sour milk look
and twist her lip like the great knotted oak

Ash and bark and brittle bone
when the sun rests in the sea my day is done

I’ll return her at once
to her carriage seat
and prepare my tired spirit
for the earth to receive

yet she is my sovereign
beauty, scepter, and crown
she bids me no longer lay my life down

ash and bark and brittle bone
my tethered spirit is finally at home
